March Medical Team

Hello to everyone out there! I apologize for not having written in awhile, and I hope this update gets you excited about what the Lord has been doing in the DR the last month!

The last week of March, we had a group of practicing nurses and nursing students from the University of Missouri come down and work with 2 of our Grace Schools. The team spent their first two days working at our main project in Herrera, and their second two days working in Sabana Perdida on the north side of Santo Domingo. The team worked doing yearly “wellness-checks” on the children, giving hygiene classes, and treating problems such as rashes, sores and asthma.

The older children in Grace School were overall extremely healthy, which showed me once again that the work God is doing through all these medical teams in Herrera is really paying off! The younger children had a lot of the problems I mentioned above, but the team was able to prescribe and purchase any medicines needed to help them. The hygiene classes should also help these kids to learn how to keep themselves clean and avoid many of the rashes and sores they were suffering from.

The teams visit to Sabana Perdida was overwhelming positive, as the difference in the children’s health from last year to this year was very visible. Last year’s team found an overwhelming number of cases of rashes and sores in Sabana Perdida, and this year there were hardly any! Praise the Lord!
Pictured here is a 2nd grader from Sabana Perdida that I immediately recognized from last year. His bubbly personality brought smiles to all the nurses, and his improved health brought tears to my eyes! You see, last year (pictured above), this boy had fungus and sores covering his entire head, and even his ears. This was probably due to poor hygiene, a poor home environment, and bad drinking water. This year (pictured right), his head looked so much better! (There was only one tiny spot of the fungus left, and it was obvious that his mom was treating it with medicines.) Praise the Lord!

Hopefully, as more medical teams continue to visit our projects, the children will grow in their knowledge of personal hygiene, and will be more regularly provided with donated items such as soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes.
